I celebrated my birthday on Saturday with a few close friends family.
A gentleman (or not) from the next table over sent me a (rather large) shot of some kind of Brazilian fermented something-or-other. Never in my life have I ever heard "the gentleman at the next table has sent you this". I thought that only happened on Sex And The City...or in Beyonce songs. Although I appreciated the gesture, it did mess me up. And not in a good way.
It's funny, when you're in your early 20s and you have a birthday, you don't really pay attention to the age approaching. All you really think about is "Where the party (pronounced 'porty') at"? Then all of a sudden, your 25th year kicks you in the crotch and you nosedive into 'late twenties'. With every passing year, you (or at least I) take inventory of lack of "life milestones" missing. I must admit, this year was no different...at first anyway. Then I realized, I'm blessed with so many second chances. I'm finally realizing what I'm truly worth and not because someone in my life "told me so". I find myself not needing the validation I've always needed from someone else. I'm realizing that I'm enough. I'm not obligated to anyone who doesn't deserve me...and THAT my friends, was the MOST valuable thing I've learned this year...and the hardest. I'm both excited and nervous to see what my life has in store for me because, valuable lesson number two, you never know what can happen.
Also, according to my friend C, Jay-Z says that 30s is the new 20s. I suppose that would make me a (late) teenager...
